Why a book fair?
First, to get as many books as possible into as many hands as possible. Most hardcover and trade paperback books cost only $1.00, and paperbacks only Fifty Cents. The sight of crowds of happy book buyers carting out boxes of books each year gives us great pride. And many of those same books come back to be sold again. AAUW offers at least 50,000 books on every topic imaginable. Books are sorted by category and alphabetically by author, so if you are hunting a particular book, odds are that you will find it.
What does AAUW do with the proceeds of the Book Fair?
We support education in all its forms, from scholarships at our two local colleges, GED programs and high school education and reading at all levels. Maybe that eager reader in first grade was inspired by an AAUW grant. Maybe that GED or high school diploma is courtesy of AAUW. 80 percent of the funds we raise stay right here in Aiken County. 20 percent goes to the Educational Foundation of AAUW in Washington, where education for women and girls is supported at the college level and above.
